Tailings Dam Build 

From June 2024 to September 2024, Tier 1 Drilling was contracted to perform an early-stage geotechnical investigation as part of a tailings dam build for a confidential client. This project was designed to assess the subsurface conditions necessary for the construction of the dam, providing critical data to inform both the environmental and structural planning phases.

The drilling programme primarily involved PQ coring to depths of 250 metres, with holes inclined at 55 degrees to target specific subsurface formations. This drilling angle allowed for more precise data collection, ensuring that the samples reflected the conditions most relevant to the dam’s future construction.

In addition to coring, Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) and push tube testing were performed to measure the density and strength of the soil, while packer testing was carried out to assess the permeability of the rock formations. These tests were essential in understanding the stability and water flow characteristics of the subsurface, both of which are critical factors for the successful design and construction of a tailings dam.

The project faced unique environmental challenges, including drilling in snow and sub-zero temperatures, with some days reaching -6°C. Despite these harsh conditions, Tier 1 Drilling’s experienced team and well-maintained equipment were able to operate efficiently throughout the project timeline. The Hanjin 8D and Sandvik D712 rigs were deployed to handle the drilling operations, with track support equipment ensuring that the rigs could navigate the challenging terrain.

The extreme weather conditions tested both the equipment and the team’s expertise, but Tier 1 Drilling successfully adapted to the environment to deliver high-quality samples and reliable data. The insights gathered during this phase will play a crucial role in shaping the final design and environmental management plan for the tailings dam.
