Geotechnical Investigation (Glencore)

Between February and April 2024, Tier 1 Drilling conducted a comprehensive geotechnical investigation for Glencore at a coal site in Northern New South Wales. The project was designed to provide critical subsurface data to support Glencore’s ongoing exploration and operational planning.

The drilling operations primarily utilised mud rotary drilling with a PDC bit, reaching depths of 300 to 400 metres. This method was particularly suited for coal drilling, enabling efficient penetration through various formations while maintaining the integrity of the drilling process. Following the initial drilling, HQ diamond tails were employed to extend the holes to 40-100 metres, collecting high-quality core samples from critical sections of the boreholes. A total of 14 holes were drilled across the project area, providing Glencore with detailed geotechnical data for their analysis.

Tier 1 Drilling utilised advanced equipment for this project, including the Sandvik D712 rig and a Scania 10,000L water truck to ensure a steady supply of water to the remote site. The project also relied on a rod slew system for efficient rod handling, along with a Volvo 6×8 tilt tray truck for transporting equipment. Additionally, a trailer-mounted 6×4 mud pump was deployed to support the mud rotary drilling operations, ensuring the stability and effectiveness of the drilling process.

The technical complexity of the project, combined with the challenging site conditions, required a high level of coordination and expertise. Tier 1 Drilling’s team maintained close communication with Glencore’s engineers throughout the project, ensuring that the drilling programme adhered to the strict safety and environmental standards required for coal site investigations.

The successful completion of the Geotechnical Investigation for Glencore provided the client with crucial subsurface information necessary for their coal mining operations.
