EIS Program (Centennial Coal)

In early 2024, Tier 1 Drilling was contracted by Centennial Coal to execute a detailed Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) Program at their site in Lithgow, New South Wales. This intensive, two-month project required precision and expertise to gather critical environmental and geotechnical data.

The drilling operations involved a combination of techniques, starting with HQ diamond coring to depths of 230 metres. This method provided high-quality core samples essential for the client’s environmental assessments. In addition to diamond coring, air rotary drilling was performed to a depth of 80 metres, a technique selected for its efficiency in reaching shallower depths and providing continuous sampling of subsurface conditions.

A key component of the programme was the installation of Vibrating Wire Piezometers (VWPs) and monitoring bores, which allowed for long-term environmental monitoring of groundwater levels and pressure conditions. This data is critical for ongoing environmental assessments, ensuring that any potential impacts of coal mining activities can be closely tracked and managed. Additionally, packer testing was performed to evaluate the permeability and strength of the rock formations, providing further insights into the site’s hydrological characteristics.

The challenging terrain and specific project requirements were managed by the Hanjin 8D rig, supported by track-mounted equipment to navigate the remote location. Tier 1 Drilling’s experienced team handled the logistical and environmental challenges of the site with expertise, ensuring that all drilling and installation operations were completed safely and within the project timeline.

The EIS Program for Centennial Coal demonstrated Tier 1 Drilling’s capacity to perform technically demanding tasks while adhering to strict environmental and safety standards. The data collected through this programme will play a vital role in future environmental monitoring and management at the Centennial Coal site, and Tier 1’s contribution ensured that the project was completed to the highest industry standards.
